[ITR Short] Breaking Free from the Comparison Trap: A Guide to Self-Empowerment and Individual Health Journeys

Ever found yourself sizing up your life against someone else's Instagram highlight reel? It's a universal struggle!

As a physical therapist, I've seen firsthand how this tendency can either kickstart a person's journey to better health, or trap them in a cycle of negativity and self-doubt.

I share the article from Liz White, " 7 Effective Strategies to Overcome Constant Self-Comparison," from Psychology Today.

With thousands of subconscious thoughts racing through our minds daily, it's vital to sift through the noise and focus on what truly matters—our individual health journey, distinct and unrushed.

Speaker 1:

Hello, hello. This is Bettina from In the Rising Podcast. This is a quick short that I wanted to talk about some strategies to overcome your constant self-comparison. I'm basing it off the article Liz White, who's a clinical psychologist. In this article posted in Psychology Today, and especially as we're looking about health and what we look like in regards to our health, we can often compare. What I have noticed as a physical therapist is people will often comment on the person next door, the person down the street, the cousin or the uncle that was just in better shape and who had done this and that, and that constant comparison can be a really good or really ignite your health journey. But it can also bring you down, and so we want to recognize that comparing can be a habit we want to share and look at our lives, and that's definitely what social media does. But why are we comparing? Is it to fit in? Is it because we're wanting to criticize ourselves? Is it because we have such a negative body image or view of our self and our life and have so many regrets that we want to constantly compare? We want to make sure we're comparing for the right reasons. Is this an automatic thing that I'm doing, or am I comparing? To look at things in a positive way, to get a goal set in mind. And we have to manage that inner critic because you know what? We can be so hard from ourselves and we have thousands and thousands and tens of thousands of negative thoughts that we are not even aware of. So we want to really broaden that view of ourselves, realize that we're not less than that. We're created just to be us. And so when you're going through your own health journey, remember that you can also give yourself the time it takes to move through your health at your pace for your life. Until next time, let's keep building one another up.
